This course is designed to give you an introduction to art therapy, and what it’s like to work as an art therapist.
You will find this course useful if you are intending to train as an art therapist or looking to gain experience to support an application for the MA in Art Psychotherapy Practice course.
We also welcome applicants you would like to gain experience of art therapy for their own personal or professional development, such as artists, teachers, youth workers and professionals working in mental health.
What can I expect from the course?
The course runs over five full-day sessions that are spaced out over two months.
We have designed the course to offer an experiential introduction to the theory and practice of art therapy.
Experiential workshops provide participants with an opportunity to explore the use of art materials and image-making to express and communicate experiences and feelings.
The workshops will constitute small groups, each led by one of the course facilitators who are qualified, HCPC registered art therapists. The emphasis of the workshops is educational rather than therapeutic.
Lectures and seminars will introduce participants to some of the ways the therapeutic potential of art is employed by experienced practitioners in a variety of settings. They take the form of presentations of clinical work and provide opportunity for discussion.
Completing the course
Successful completion of the course requires a minimum attendance of 80%.
A certificate of attendance will be awarded at the end of the course. This will not automatically ensure entry to further professional training provided by the Art Therapy Northern Programme, however, the certificate will support an application to undertake further training.
Please note the Art Therapy Foundation Course will not qualify you to practice clinically as an art therapist, but it will give you a good experiential grounding and enable you to take your learning further.

- Thursday 23 January 2020 – 9.30am to 4.30pm
- Friday 24 January 2020 – 9.30am to 4.30pm
- Thursday 13 February 2020 – 9.30am to 4.30pm
- Friday 14 February 2020 – 9.30am to 3.30pm
Course fees and applications
The course costs £475, with fees paid when your place on the course has been accepted.
Please note if you drop out of the course you will still incur the full financial liability of the course.

To apply for a place on the Foundation Course in Art Therapy you need to complete an application form.
Alongside your application form we’d like you to provide a short 500-word essay that responds to the question – ‘is art always therapeutic?’, as well as a reference.
Please include one reference from someone who knows you in a relevant capacity to support your application.
