Unfortunately, there are long waiting times to be seen at our service. We understand that this can be distressing and challenging. We can provide support to people waiting to start treatment via our peer support workers.
If you are transferring from another gender clinic you may be seen sooner, depending on how long you have already been waiting. This cannot be guaranteed, however.
Gender services nationally are experiencing high demand at present. This demand is resulting in longer wait times than we would want or expect for our service users. We acknowledge this can feel extremely frustrating and are working locally with our team and with our commissioners to improve this.
We on average receive 40 referrals per month to our service. As of August 2024 the average wait time is 67 months (268 weeks) and we are currently booking assessments for those people that were referred in Jan 2019. Please note we are unable to accept requests to expedite or prioritise any assessment this is to ensure equitability. We will process referrals in order of referral date.
In most instances service users legally have the right to choose where they receive NHS treatment. Information about choices currently available can be found NHS Choice Framework - what choices are available to you in your NHS care - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

Individual waiting times are variable. Unfortunately we cannot give specific times for individual waits. Please do not contact the clinic to enquire about waiting times as we cannot provide any more information than is provided here.
If you have received confirmation that your referral has been accepted we will not remove you from the list. Please keep us updated of any changes to your contact details.
You can update us with changes to your contact details either by emailing porterbrook@shsc.nhs.uk or calling on 0114 2716671.
