A new podcast discussing mental health has been launched by the NHS in Sheffield this World Mental Health Day.
The Mind:Set podcast, produced by Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC), will discuss interesting areas related to mental health and offer tips and advice to help you to look after your wellbeing.
Two episodes have been released on World Mental Health Day.
The first looks at physical activity, which can reduce your risk of dementia and depression by 30%, and gives listeners tips on how to get moving.
Explaining the science behind this, Nicoletta Lekka, consultant psychiatrist at SHSC, says: “We know that chronic inflammation can cause depression and poor mental health. Physical activity has positive effects on mental health because it can reduce inflammation.
“It also lowers inflammation in the brain, which may be the reason it can lower the risk of dementia such as Alzheimer’s and can benefit the cognitive functioning of older people.”
The second discusses the history, and the future, of mental health care in Sheffield.
It delves into the past of the South Yorkshire Asylum and looks at the journey to the therapeutic care offered today.
