“Rewarding and educational” – What’s it like being a governor at SHSC?

We are looking for people to join our council of governors and help to shape the future of health services in Sheffield.

In this blog Billie Critchlow, carer governor, describes the role and why it is important.

You can find out more about becoming a governor at SHSC on the council of governors page on this website.

Nominations are open until 29 April.

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust relies upon the unpaid services of the families and friends of its clients to provide daily support for people who live with a wide range of conditions and disabilities. The Trust could not operate without its carers, and it matters that the Trust recognises our importance.

A carer governor holds a unique position of being the voice of this diverse group. We can hold to account the non-executive directors, ensuring that carers’ feedback is at the centre of the Trust's work. We can highlight and ask for additional assurance when we feel that carers’ needs are being overlooked or neglected.

The role of the governor is rewarding and educational. We find out how and why the Trust’s services develop as they do, and our input is sought into the creation of strategy and service development. We can support what is good but also call for change where it is needed.
