Press Release: Happy birthday to the NHS - Sheffield mental health trust marks the 75th birthday of the NHS with celebratory gala and more

Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) and Sheffield Hallam University are today co-hosting a celebratory gala at Sheffield Hallam’s Collegiate Campus for hundreds of health and social care professionals and students to mark the NHS’s 75th birthday.

The milestone will be celebrated with an afternoon of wellbeing activities including: art workshops, therapy dog sessions, yoga classes, mindful gardening, therapeutic crafting, badminton and much more!

The event will also feature virtual reality demonstrations, exhibition stands, Sheffield Hallam facility tours and talks from University and SHSC leaders.

Sharon Mays, Chair of SHSC, said: “5 July 2023 marks 75 years of the National Health Service. The NHS treats over a million people a day in England and touches all of our lives. When it was founded in 1948, the NHS was the first universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery. It is truly unique and treasured by so many.

“In Sheffield we are celebrating in many ways. Today we’ve joined forces with Sheffield Hallam University who play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of nurses, allied health professionals and many more. Together we will be celebrating 75 years of the NHS by concentrating on wellbeing. The wellbeing of NHS staff is key to ensuring we have a happy, healthy and fulfilled workforce, which in turn leads to better outcomes and experiences for service users.

“I want to say a huge thank you to our NHS staff. You are the heart of the NHS. Thank you for your hard work, commitment, dedication, and everything you do every day for those we support. Happy 75th birthday.”

The event is just one element of the wider celebrations happening across the trust which include;

  • A delegation of staff attending a service at Westminster Abbey

  • Key NHS buildings being lit up blue at dusk in Sheffield

  • A specially commissioned poem by Sheffield Poet laureate, Danaé Wellington

  • Local celebrity messages wishing NHS staff a happy birthday

  • A parkrun takeover on Saturday 8 July and Sunday 9 July

  • A great big staff giveaway

  • The creation of collaborative artwork with staff and service users working together to create a special art piece for the birthday.

Sheffield staff at Westminster Abbey service

Staff members from SHSC will join their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, senior government and political leaders, health leaders and celebrities at a service at Westminster Abbey. The service, to be held at 11am, will include an address by NHS Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard.

Sheffield lights up blue for the NHS

Across the country, buildings will be lighting up blue to mark the 75th birthday of the NHS. The Michael Carlisle Centre and Netherthorpe House will be joined by Sheffield Town Hall in lighting up blue this evening.

Poem commission by Sheffield poet laureate

One of the highlights of the activity for ‘NHS 75’ has been commissioning the Poet Laureate for Sheffield, Danaé Wellington, to write a bespoke poem that honours the NHS for all it does. Danaé has worked with service users and staff to capture the feelings of the NHS specially for its birthday.

Here is a Place by Danaé Wellington

Hope, like sunlight, floods the hallways
from Sidney Street to Woodland View.
It softens the half-smile,
of those who know waiting rooms
better than their own homes.

Busy feet bustle through entrances and exits,
voices hum and buzz as walls close in tight.
The growing tension between getting
answers and pacifying angry telephones,
weighs heavily on even the strongest souls.

Until noon. PG tips and full biscuit tins are the holy grail
for those who retreat to communal kitchens
and staffrooms. Listening ears and a slice of angel cake
doctor bruised hearts and quieten
the fears stirring on the inside.

The lifeblood of real people trying their best
pumps through the heart of this service.
Those armed in blue, nurse the busy thoughts crowding anxious
Minds, while fighting the protest breaking out in their own.
The weight of life pushes against them
but the pressure forges a community as strong as steel;
the duty to get it right is what holds this place together.

To stand arm in arm,
as a multitude of helping hands, treasuring every laughter
born out of tears, every pat on the back, every hoorah;
reignites the purpose of rising another morning.

So, flicker on the lights and ready yourselves for the day ahead.

You are history writing itself;
writing a legacy, not perfect, but still radiant as a bursting sun.

Sheffield celebrities wish the NHS happy birthday

Some well-known and famous faces will be popping up on our social media channels through the morning, with their very own special message to the NHS on its 75th birthday.

Parkrun takeover

This weekend (Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July) NHS staff will be joining thousands of runners and walkers across the country for their local parkrun event. SHSC will be represented by members of staff wearing specially designed NHS 75 t-shirts and is urging fellow runners to wear blue as part of a national initiative.

A great big staff giveaway

Organisations and businesses across Sheffield have also come together to help SHSC celebrate and reward dedicated doctors, nurses and the wider workforce via a special giveaway that has taken place in the run-up to the NHS’s big day on 5 July. The generous giveaways include: a case of Henderson’s Relish, Leadmill tickets, Sheffield FC tickets, National Video Game Museum admission, Everly Pregnant Brothers tickets, Tramlines Music Festival weekend tickets and loads of other unique to Sheffield prizes!

Collaborative art work

Across the trust there have also been several art initiatives taking place, including a collaborative mosaic that brings together community service users and people on wards to create a large, combined art piece to be displayed at an SHSC site.

There will also be one metre high, 3D ‘NHS 75’ letters making their debut at the celebration gala later today where the trust will be inviting staff and service users to doodle their thanks to the NHS before touring them across our services in the coming weeks.

NHS 1000 miles

Our staff have committed to walking, running, swimming or cycling (or a combination) the distance of 1000 miles this year. As well as being a great way to mark the birthday, physical activity is good for your body and mind.

You can read one of our staff members' experiences on the challenge here.

75 trees for 75 years

On Thursday 8 June we kicked off these celebrations by planting the first of 75 trees that we have committed to planting this year, in a ceremony at our Grenoside Grange site.

We buried a time capsule alongside it which included a copy of our NHS75 poem, a newspaper from the day, artwork from service users at Forest Close and a ‘hello my name is...’ NHS badge.

The ceremony was attended by staff, service users, the councillor for West Ecclesfield, the Ecclesfield Parish Chair, Danaé Wellington and our Chair, Sharon Mays.
