Popular mental health art exhibition extended

The 'better connected' art exhibition has been extended due to popular demand.

The exhibition is run in partnership between Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Flourish and features fantastic artwork from people with lived experience of mental health and people who work in mental health services. It is on display at The Circle in the heart of Sheffield city centre.

It opened on 5 November and was originally due to finish on Friday 15 November but will now be extended to Tuesday 26 November.

When planning the exhibition, the theme for anyone wanting to submit a piece was 'better connected.' Contributors were able to interpret that however they wanted.

And it led to a wonderful array of art being produced which is now proudly on display.

A celebration event for the exhibition on Thursday 7 November proved popular with the Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Jayne Dunn, giving it the official seal of approval.

Soo Boswell, our arts in health coordinator, said: "Spending time creating artwork can have excellent benefits for mental health. This display features artwork produced by some of our service users but also people who work for us too.

"It's been great to see the artwork on display and I am delighted it will be open for longer to give as many people as possible the chance to take the time to visit.

"We'd love to see you there."

Rachael West, facilities and building manager for Voluntary Action Sheffield at The Circle, added: “The Circle is delighted to have this wonderful exhibition with us for a few days longer than originally planned. We have had lots of people view the work, including those attending large events in our conference suite, which leads out into the Gallery. So many visitors to The Circle have told us how much they have really enjoyed the exhibition. What better way to enjoy a break from a day’s event than to enjoy such bright, colourful and thought provoking works of art provided by Sheffield Flourish – what an achievement by so many talented artists.”

Sara Sanderson, information coordinator for Sheffield Flourish, said: “This exhibition has sparked wonderful engagement, with visitors not only appreciating the art but also sharing their own reflections on what ‘better connected’ means to them. It’s what this exhibition is all about, art as a bridge that brings us together, and reminds us that when we connect and support one another, we all flourish. We look forward to welcoming more of the community to explore this shared experience.”

The exhibition, which is free of charge, is open week days from 9am to 4pm.
