Leading university academic appointed to our Board
A professor at the University of Sheffield has been appointed to the Board of Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) – the organisation that’s responsible for mental health in the city.
Professor Brendan Stone is a Professor of Social Engagement and the Humanities, and Deputy Vice President for Education at the University of Sheffield.
He will join SHSC as a University Associate Non-Executive Director and build on his long association with the organisation which dates back to 2008 when Brendan became one of the Trust’s first service user governors.
Over the past 10 years Brendan has played a key role in developing the Trust’s approach to engaging with service users and carers, not only in their own care, but in helping to shape the future of the services.
Professor Brendan Stone, said: “I’m really excited to join the Trust in this role, and I’m looking forward to helping build further links between the University and the Trust. Both organisations have at the heart of their missions the aim of improving lives and working to create a more equitable society.
“It’s more important than ever at the moment to be assertive about our core values - and in healthcare contexts it’s critical that the voices of people living with illness and distress are heard - and acted on.”
Jayne Brown OBE, Chair at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’re very excited to welcome Brendan to the Trust’s Board and we’re looking forward to him sharing his personal experience and academic expertise with us.
“Brendan brings so much to the table – he’s a respected academic, he has strong links with local and national mental health charities, he’s a champion of patient voice and he is truly passionate about mental health.
“The decision to appoint Brendan was a unanimous one and we all agreed he will be an excellent addition to the organisation, and I cannot wait to start working with him.”
