Inpatient Care

Inpatient Care

There are two inpatient wards for people over 65 with mental health needs. One serves the north of the city and is based at the Northern General Hospital in the Longley Centre and is called Hawthorn; the other serves the south of the city and is based in Nether Edge at the Michael Carlisle Centre and is called Daleside.

Both Daleside and Hawthorn are inpatient mental health assessment, treatment and rehabilitation wards for adults aged 65 years and over. The clinical team consists of trained nurses, support workers, qualified Occupational Therapists, an art therapist, a physiotherapist, junior doctors and two consultants. The teams also have housekeeping staff and a ward coordinator.

The ward teams work closely with DART (The Discharge and Rehabilitation Team) and Community Mental Health Teams to support discharges from Daleside.

Referrals to the wards are mainly from the Community Mental Health teams. They also receive referrals from the Psychiatric Liaison teams that work within the general hospitals. Emergency referrals are received from the on-call registrar under the guidance of the on-call duty psychiatric consultant.
